3613. Tác giả chính: Svatopluk Soucek
Nhan đề: Piri Reis & Turkish mapmaking after Columbus : the Khalili portolan atlas / by Svat Soucek. Volume II
Số phân loại : 526.09561 S435; Đặc điểm vật lý: 176Tr, [16]Tr of plates : Minh họa ; 1 cm
*Tóm tắt : The Ottoman naval commander and cartographer Piri Reis (1475-1554) played a leading role in transmitting the discoveries made on Columbus' first voyage to the New World to the inhabitants of the Muslim lands around the Mediterranean. His work is known from fragments of two world maps, and from his Kitab-i-Bahriye (Book of Seamanship), which he illustrated with hundreds of charts derived principally from medieval portolans. The Khalili Portolan Atlas is a fine, hand-drawn example of the cartographic tradition established by Piri Reis. It also contains a series of city views, including unprecedented depictions of Galata, on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, and of Candia in Crete, which reflect the vitality of Ottoman topographical painting in the late 17th centure. Professor Soucek shows how Piri Reis' works represented a fusion of the Islamic world view with European map-making traditions, modified by his own experience as a navigator, and by the recent discoveries of Columbus      .

3647. Tác giả chính: Ronald Lane Reese

Nhan đề: University physics / Ronald Lane Reese
Số phân loại : 530 R430; Đặc điểm vật lý: 232 p. : 29 cm
*Tóm tắt : Reese writes a text that embraces the spirit of many reform goals, such as better integration of modern physics topics, a stronger emphasis on conceptual understanding, and an attention to different learning styles. Most importantly, however, Reese writes for students to allow them not only to learn the tools that physics provides, but also to see why those tools work and the beauty of the ideas that underlie them. Because students sometimes fail to see how the topics of physics connect to each other or to the world outside the classroom, Reese introduces each new topic by describing how it relates to experiences and phenomena with which the student is already familiar or to topics previously discussed. Reese emphasizes introductory physics, rather than encyclopedic physics, leaving appropriate topics for more advanced courses      .

3650. Tác giả chính: Eugene Hecht

Nhan đề: Physics : calculus / Eugene Hecht. Volume II
Số phân loại : 530 H201/V.2; Đặc điểm vật lý: 2 v. : ill. (some col.) ; 29 cm + 2 computer laser optical discs (4 3/4 in.)
*Tóm tắt : Hecht brings to bear the perspective of both historical concepts and contemporary physics. While the text covers the standard range of material from kinematics to quantum physics, Hecht has carefully limited the math required to basic calculus and very basic vector analysis. He omits obscure, high-level topics while focusing on helping students understand the fundamental concepts of modern-day physics. Calculus and vector analysis are both painstakingly developed as tools, and then used only insofar as they illuminate the physics. Hecht deliberately paces comfortably, justifies where each topic is going, stops to take stock of where the students have been, and points out the marvelous unity of the discourse. Informed by a 20th century perspective and a commitment to providing a conceptual overview of the discipline, Hecht's CALCULUS 2/e keeps students involved and focused      .
