*Tóm tắt : The Dynamics of Social Welfare Policy reinvents the contemporary social welfare policy textbook. Organized around the explicit premise that every kind of social work practice embodies a social welfare policy, the book develops three types of knowledge: (1) a description of social welfare policy, (2) a model for understanding any social welfare policy, and (3) tools for thinking critically about social welfare. Recognizing the fluidity of social welfare, the book also helps undergraduate and graduate students identify the triggers that lead to changes in social policy, and, in turn, influence what social workers actually do...      .

In this highly important book, an international team of eighteen doctors, philosophers, and lawyers present a fresh and thorough discussion of these issues. They not only aim to show the way to practical advances but also to provide an accessible guide to the debates for readers who have not been previously introduced to them. And they pay particular attention to the sensitive nature of the information yielded by a test for the HIV antibody. Together, the essays illuminate public policy and medical practice in connection with HIV and AIDS as well as broader issues about professional ethics and individual rights in other medical and social contexts      .

Nhan đề: Betrayal of trust : the collapse of global health / Laurie Garrett
Số phân loại : 362.1 L385; Đặc điểm vật lý: xi, 477Tr ; 24 cm
*Tóm tắt : his is a study of a full-blown global health crisis in the making. Laurie Garrett takes readers around the world to reveal how a series of potential and present public health catastrophies marks the death of public health and taken together form a portrait of real global disaster in the making. She argues that public health is a bond between a government and its people and if either side betrays that trust the system collapses like a house of cards. The book also aims to illustrate how, since 1980, this trust has frayed and our global public health system been systematically destroyed. It contends that, with globalization, no person is safe from antibiotic resistant superbugs, epidemic or biowar. Garrett takes the reader to India, where an outbreak of bubonic plague created international hysteria; to Zaire where the deadly ebola virus broke out in a filthy and completely unequipped hospital, and to the 15 states of the former Soviet Union have seen the collapse in their public health system. She also explores the increasingly chaotic, ungoverned world of biological terrorism      .

2305. Nhan đề: Global public goods for health : health, economic, and public health perspectives / Richard Smith ... [và những người khác]

Số phân loại : 362.1 R511; Đặc điểm vật lý: 287Tr : Minh họa ; 23 cm
*Tóm tắt : The book addresses the growing globalism of health from the unique perspective of the economic concept of public goods. This concept identifies where a 'good' or service, such as knowledge of an infectious disease outbreak which would be of benefit globally, will not be produced if left to 'the market' because of a lack of incentive due principally to not being able to exlude people from using the good. in this case the producer, of the information on disease outbreak for example, cannot charge a price and therefore cannot recoup production expenses. Nationally, the production of these goods is usually assured by government intervention, but at the global level there is no 'global government' to undertake this role. The Global Public Good concept therefore extends the economic analysis of public goods to this international level. In this book we consider specifically the aspects of health that may be classed as Global Public Goods and considers how the concept helps to ensure their provision      .
