Nghiên cứu hành động nhằm nâng cao kỹ năng làm bài thi TOEIC cho sinh viên trường Đại học Hàng hải Việt Nam

In an attempt to investigate the obstacles encountered by the students at Vietnam Maritime University while sitting for the TOEIC test and giving some recommendations to improve their test taking skills, the main purposes of the study were to find out (1) the main difficulties affecting the students’ test results, (2) and giving the students some suggestions to better test taking skills. The subjects of the study were 85 third - year students. The students were invited to answer a survey questionnaire. The result of the research showed that lack of test taking skills led to bad results for the students. Besides, the study reveals that teachers played an important role in instructing the students about necessary techniques in the hope that they would gain better scores.

Nghiên cứu về việc sử dụng các thủ pháp trong làm bài thi TOEIC đối với sinh viên trường Đại học Hàng hải Việt Nam

This study was conducted at Vietnam Maritime University with a view to exploring test-taking strategies relative to learners’ performance in TOEIC Reading Comprehension as well as identifying differences in reading strategies among high proficiency and low proficiency students at Vietnam Maritime University.

The subjects involved in the study are over 100 students of Vietnam Maritime University (VMU) chosen randomly from 4 TOEIC classes. Two classes are at Elementary Level (TOEIC Level 1), the other classes are at Intermediate Level (TOEIC Level 2). The data was collected from survey questionnaires, interviews and administration of two TOEIC tests for students. The results indicated that students at VMU put more emphasis on using reading strategies when they attended the TOEIC course. In addition, this study also revealed some differences in reading strategy use among students of different proficiency levels. However, when looking at the data, the researcher found some shared strategies between the two groups.

From the findings, the study suggested several pedagogical implications for teachers, students and test-designers at VMU, acknowledged limitations of the study and offered suggestions for further research.

Phương pháp khuyến khích sinh viên năm thứ nhất tại trường Cao đẳng Nghề Bách Nghệ Hải Phòng trong các hoạt động nói

This minor thesis is carried out to investigate what kinds of speaking activities are currently used in the speaking lessons for first-year students at Haiphong Polytechnics College and some suggestions are given to motivate students in these activities.

The study has collected data from two survey questionnaires to find out the fact of the current situation of teaching and learning speaking skill for and of the first-year students at Haiphong Polytechnics College. The results from these two survey questionnaires have revealed some aspects of teaching and learning speaking skill at the college. From these results, some suggestions have been proposed to teachers, students and college rector in order to motivate students in leaning speaking and to improve the quality of teaching and learning speaking skill.

Điều tra về tính trầm lặng của học sinh trong các giờ nói tiếng Anh - Điển cứu tại trường THPT Toàn Thắng

Realizing many 11th graders at Toan Thang high school being passive in English Speaking classes, this study aims to explore students’ perception toward their reticence behaviour in real- world classes, factors contributing to it and students’ expectation. A total of 373 students enrolled in eight 11th grade classes, were first observed in eight English Speaking lessons, and then participated in filling in two sets of open-ended questionnaire. After that, six of them were interviewed using semi-structured format. A mix- method analysis is conducted to explore the findings. From the study, it is revealed that students have strong willingness to participate in English activities though they rarely do so in reality due to various learning misconceptions. The result indicates that teachers need not only to use interesting, various and suitable activities to encourage students to learn the target language but also to explain and have more informal talks with students to teach them how to learn effectively.

Sử dụng phương pháp phỏng vấn nghiên cứu về động lực phát triển chuyên môn của giao viên tiếng Anh tại một trường THPT

The study deals with the theories of the motivation for EFL teachers in participation in professional development. It is important that it should be carried out to investigate the case of EFL teachers at Hai An high school.

The researcher uses the methods such as interviewing closely EFL teachers to understand their attitude to professional development, and the participants all have positive attitude toward PD. At the same time, the researcher studies the professional development activities that EFL teachers participate. In accordance with the theory mentioned in chapter one, the EFL teachers all take part in the same formal and informal PD activities, especially the reflective practice. Also, the participants are asked to talk about their opportunities and challenges for their professional development.

The result shows that the EFL teachers have strong motivation for PD, although they have some certain obstacles in participation in this process.

The study also gives suggestions of measures to overcome difficulties when taking part in professional development.

Phân tích đối chiếu và gợi ý giảng dạy thành ngữ chỉ sự thông minh và hiểu biết trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt

Although great attention has been paid to idioms by researchers and linguists in Vietnam as well as in the world, there has been no study conducted on idioms denoting intelligence and understanding in English and Vietnamese. This is the reason for the author’s choice of the study. This thesis has two major purposes: (1) to find out not only the syntactic but also semantic similarities as well as differences in the idioms of this type in English and Vietnamese, and (2) to give some teaching implications for teachers English.

In order to fulfill the objectives of the study, contrastive analysis method was used. Moreover, 50 English and 50 Vietnamese idioms were collected various sources, mainly from dictionaries. They were then carefully analyzed with the main focus on their syntactic and semantic features.



The results of the analysis mentioned above shows that although the idioms under investigation share some similarities, they have notable and interesting differences in terms of their syntactic features especially with regard to their clause and phrase patterns as well as their semantic ones. The study suggests that the above-mentioned idioms in English are more difficult to learn than their Vietnamese counterparts. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the teaching of these idioms, especially to such factors as the number of idioms, student level and frequency of practice.

Các tục ngữ chỉ mối quan hệ gia đình: Một phân tích đối chiếu và những ứng dụng trong dạy học

The wisdom of proverbs has guided people in their social interactions for thousand years throughout the world. Proverbs in general and proverbs denoting family relationships in particular are useful for not only old people but also young ones. They give us good pieces of advice and precious moral lessons. The study on proverbs denoting family relationships in English and Vietnamese is an attempt to investigate their syntactic features as well as their semantic ones. A contrastive analysis has been made for the purpose of finding out the similarities and differences between English proverbs denoting family relationships and Vietnamese ones in terms of syntactic and semantic components. The result of the study may make a great contribution to communication as well as writings. In addition, it may also provide helpful suggestions for teachers and learners of English in using proverbs. Through that, we can develop humanism which is really important and indispensable in any society.

Phát triển kỹ năng nói cho học sinh qua việc học theo dự án

In an attempt to develop English speaking skill for tenth-grade students at An Lao High School by using Project Based Learning, this research addressed two issues: (1) students’ attitudes toward the use of Project Based Learning in their English lessons; (2) the impacts of using PBL on students’ English speaking. The instruments employed for data collection and analysis of the study included two tests and two questionnaires for the students, an interview with two teachers and the teacher’s journals. Research findings showed that the students had positive attitudes towards the use of PBL in their English lessons. It was also revealed that PBL was beneficial to help students improve their performance in speaking lessons. Based on the findings, some implications would be given for both the teacher and the students. With all these information, this study is expected to be useful to both teachers and students in teaching and learning English speaking skill.

Đặc điểm cấu trúc và chức năng của khởi ngữ trong tiếng Anh và tương đương trong tiếng Viết

For English learners, “fronting” seems to be a new and strange idea although it can be used unconsciously in daily life. In fact, unless they are linguists, not many people are patient enough to investigate this linguistic phenomenon. Therefore, this research is carried out to provide the more comprehensive perspectives on “fronting” for English learners’ confidence in communication when this phenomenon is in need. For a better understanding, “fronting” in English is compared and contrasted with “khởi ngữ” in Vietnamese in the research. The analysis data include 50 sentences with “fronting” in English and 50 sentences with “khởi ngữ” in Vietnamese collected from books and newspapers since 1945. The result of the research shows the similarities and differences in both structure and function of “fronting” and “khởi ngữ”. Moreover, the research discusses the reasons why these similarities and differences exist so that Vietnamese students of English can master “fronting” and “khởi ngữ” in communication.

Nghiên cứu về việc sử dụng hồ sơ bài tập trong việc cải thiện kỹ năng nghe hiểu của sinh viên thứ 2 tại Trường ĐH Công nghiệp Hà Nội

This study was conducted to explore the efficiency of the application of portfolios in the listening skill of second-year non English major students at Hanoi University of Industries, HAUI. It took into consideration the listening progress of target students in order to generalize this method at the university.

The participants included 52 second-year non English major students at HAUI. A designed listening portfolio given to students and collected at the end of the process, questionnaires and task performance measurement were employed to investigate the efficiency of listening portfolios and then, find out some suggestions on teaching and learning listening skill. Qualitative method was used to analyze data obtained from the aforementioned data collection instruments.



This is a piece of action research and the findings of the research provided insight into the efficiency of portfolios in improving listening skill. The test results also showed that progresses were made after the process of portfolios. Based on the findings, some recommendations, limitations and suggestions were given out.

Từ chỉ chức danh thuộc hệ thông quản lý của công ty cổ phần trong tiếng Anh và cách diễn đạt tương đương trong tiếng Việt - Nghiên cứu từ góc độ ngữ dụng học

This study is an attempt to uncover the intrinsic meanings of commonly used English professional titles in the management system of American joint-stock companies and look for their Vietnamese equivalents. In the study, the researcher investigates some American and Vietnamese companies’ organizational structures to figure out and make a list of the common professional titles in English and Vietnamese language, centering upon the titles in the management system of a company. These jobs titles are then described, compared and contrasted in terms of responsibilities to look for the equivalents in the target language. The results of the study present the Vietnamese equivalents of the investigated English professional titles. Based on those findings, the thesis provides some implications for translation and pedagogy, which would be of great help for translators as well as teachers and learners of business English.

Tác động của văn hóa học tập ở Việt Nam đến thái độ của học sinh trung học phổ thông đối với các hoạt động học tiếng Anh theo đường hương giao tiếp

This paper reports on a survey study on the influence of Vietnamese learning culture on upper-secondary school students’ attitudes towards communicative activities in learning English. The questionnaires were used to collect data from a systematically selected sample of 166 students from an upper-secondary school. The findings demonstrated the influence of the Vietnamese culture of learning on the students’ attitudes towards communicative activities, which were favourable, on some facets, and unfavourable on the others, for the implementation of CLT in the research context. Accordingly, some suggestions were proposed concerning either adaptation of the CLT approach and its spawn activities to the Vietnamese cultural context, or adjustment of the Vietnamese learning culture, or both, which aims at successful implementation of CLT in Vietnam.

Việc Sử dụng ngôn ngữ cơ thế trong các bài phát biểu nhậm chức của các tổng thống Mỹ

This thesis has the aim to make investigations of the body language used by the U.S. Presidents in their inaugural addresses, which can provide the readers with the clear and specific examples of body languages used in official situations. The findings of this research can also enlighten the possible applications of body languages into social communication of English language, especially for education. The further applications of body languages into communication will also be included in the latter part of this research. From such expectations of the findings, the author will use the methods of translating the speeches made in the inaugural addresses of the Presidents Bush and Obama for elaborated analysis, so that all dimensions of the body languages used by the two presidents will be enlightened. The main findings of this study include the two significant aspects of body languages used by the Presidents in their important events: they have more tendencies to use hand gestures than smiles to build attraction of the audiences, and more importantly, they have the stable uses of dominant hands in associations with describing the good things with positive valances, and the non-dominant hands in describing the bad things with negative valances. In this study, the author made summary of the main findings of this research, as well as the emphasis of the different roles of hands and smiles used in communication, the uses of the left and right hand gestures with positive and negative valences, and the implication of the uses of body languages in cross-cultural communication for better effectiveness. Finally, the author also made suggestions for the possible further studies in the same research field of body language in communication.

Nghiên cứu thăm dò chiến lược học từ vựng của sinh viên không chuyên tiếng Anh năm thứ nhất trường ĐH Tân Trào

This paper reports on vocabulary learning strategies by first year non-English major students (N=219) at Tân Trào University. The purpose of the study is to explore (1) the most commonly-used vocabulary learning strategies that the first year non-English major students at Tân Trào University were using to learn English vocabulary, (2) reasons for their preferences and (3) the effectiveness of those strategies to their vocabulary learning which is self-evaluated by the students. A vocabulary learning questionnaire and interview were used for data collection. The study points out that (1) learners only limite to some strategies, (2) learners realize the benefits of those strategies on retaining sound, spelling and equivalent meanings and help them concentrate on lessons, (3) there is a strong influence of teaching method and past learning experiences on learners’ choice of vocabulary learning strategies, and the practice of these limited vocabulary learning strategies helps learners to retain sound, spelling and equivalent meaning of a word. Finnally, some conclusions were drawn to improve vocabulary learning and teaching.

Cụm Danh từ trong một số chương từ “Kiêu hãnh và định kiến” của Jane Áuten: Phân tích theo quan điểm ngữ pháp chức năng hệ thống

This study provides an insight into the selected nominal groups in “Pride and Prejudice”, one of the most enduringly popular novels in the world literature, by Jane Austen, in the light of Systemic Functional Grammar.

While the make-up of the nominal groups in the original work is revealed and described, an analysis of English nominal groups and Vietnamese equivalents in the two Vietnamese translated versions by Diệp Minh Tâm and Thu Trinh is also presented.



Upon completion of the research, the findings reflect the similarites and differences in the treatment of the nominal groups between the two translators, based on which some implications for potential translators of this masterpiece are produced.

Pronunciation is of great importance for successful oral communication to take place since it is an important ingredient of the communicative competence. Nevertheless, among millions of people speaking English, there exist a great number of people who make mistakes in pronunciation; specially producing English affricate and fricative consonant sounds makes many learners confused. This minor thesis aims at identifying the most common mistakes when producing English affricative and fricative sounds by the students grade 8 at Le Quy Don secondary school, as well as investigating the main causes of these mistakes. On the foundation of these mistakes, some solutions are suggested to mitigate the problems.
