This study is an investigation into the problems experienced by non-major students of English at Haiphong Foreign Language Center-Haiphong University in learning listening skill. The subjects of the study were 75 non-English major students and 5 teachers at Haiphong Foreign Language Center (HFLC)-Haiphong University. The data were collected through the questionnaires from students, and the interviews from the teachers. The study employed three main research methods; they were qualitative, quantitative and descriptive methods.

The findings of the research will reveal the difficulties that learners experience when they learn the listening skill at the center. Some conclusions were drawn; recommendations were made, some limitations were pointed out and suggestions were offered.

Nghiên cứu hành động việc sử dụng phim hoạt hình có nhạc để dạy tiếng Anh cho học sinh tiểu học tại trường Tiểu học Đồng Hòa

This study aims to examine the application of animated cartoon to teach English to the third graders at Dong Hoa Primary School. It uses Action Research which consists of four stages: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this study are 39 students from the grade 3B of the Academic Year 2013 – 2014. The data is collected using the following instruments: document analysis, lesson plan and questionnaire. The study employs qualitative and qualitative method to analyses the data. Based on the results of this research, the author concludes that the employment of the animated cartoon in teaching English is effective in improving quality of teaching-learning process, through the following steps: (1) designing appropriate animation clips, (2) using the three-phase technique in employing the animation, and (3) guiding and managing the activities by the teacher. The students also show their positive responses toward the implementation of animated cartoon.

Dạy từ vựng tiếng Anh cho học sinh tiểu học qua việc ứng dụng các hoạt đọng thể chất đồng thể

It has been known that all babies can speak their mother tongue well as their listening comprehension skill develops before speaking skill. In other word, they will be able to speak when they are willing. Basing on the way a baby learns his first language, James Asher, a teacher of psychology of the State University of San Joe developed a teaching method that motivates children to learn a foreign language well. The objectives of this study are to describe the procedure of teaching English Vocabulary to primary school children through application of Total Physical Response activities (TPR) and to justify the importance and effectiveness of using TPR activities in teaching foreign language vocabulary.

To achieve the objectives of the study, the writer conducted the study at Hoa Binh II Primary School in Thuy Nguyen District, Hai Phong city. Students of grade I were the subject of the study. There were 50 students; 20 girls and 30 boys.

With detailed investigations and valid findings, the researcher believes this study is a reliable and useful source of reference for language classes in general and for any Vietnamese EFL learners and teachers who share the same concern.

Nghiên cứu việc sử dụng ngôn ngữ cử chỉ trong việc dạy tiếng Anh cho trẻ 5 tuổi ở trường Mầm non Sao Mai

The present research aims to discover the attitudes of five years old children towards the use of body language in their English lessons and the subsequent changes in their speaking and listening competences after being taught English with body language. The obtained results showed the children’s positive attitude which could assist them in learning English faster and more effectively. Additionally, the students’ speaking and listening competences appeared to be improved evidently with teachers using more body language in teaching English. Furthermore, the study provided implications for teaching English through body language to children, especially to five year old ones at Sao Mai Kindergarten.

The researcher believes that this study provides EFL teachers with relevant knowledge in designing and implementation activities with body language for children in English classes.

Attempts are also made to identify methods as well as procedures used in translating medical terms in the textbook “English in Medicine”. Hopefully, the result of the study will be helpful to ESP teachers and learners who are interested in medical terms.

Vai trò của phụ huynh trong việc tạo động lực học tiếng Anh cho học sinh tiểu học

This study attempted to find out the roles of parents towards their children in learning English at home. The participants of this study were all parents of third graders in Ngoc Xuyen Primary School, Do Son District. The data were collected from the questionnaires and interviews. The analysis of the data revealed that parents not only had positive attitude towards their children’s English learning but also expressed strong willingness to be involved in children’s English learning process. Results from the study show that besides school instruction, parents reported various strategies and activities that they used at home to encourage their children to learn English. The data also indicated that there were four types of roles that parents played in motivating their children to learn English : an advocate, a supervisor, a facilitator and a guider. The parents involved in the study also reported that they faced some barriers when helping their children in English learning, the most significant of which are the lack of English knowledge and financial condition.

Đánh giá chất lượng bản dịch tiếng Việt truyện “Harry Potter và hòn đá phù thủy” trong tiểu thuyết Harry Potter áp dụng mô hình của Newmark

The focus of this thesis is to assess the quality of a literary translation, specifically chapter seven “The sorting hat” excerpting from the novel “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone”, basing on the schema of Translation Quality Assessment proposed by Newmark. By this way, the writer has found out that the translation by Ly Lan has obtained a certain success. However, it still reveals some mismatches between the source text and the target text especially in terms of semantics. In addition, some other mistakes which may affect the conciseness of the translation are also pointed out. From the basis of the findings, the writer proposes some implications for translators to improve the quality of the translation, especially literary translation.

Khảo sát thái độ của phụ huynh về việc học tiếng Anh của con ở trường Tiểu học

This study investigated the parents’ attitudes towards students’ English language (EL) learning at Hai Thanh Primary School (HTPS), Duong Kinh District, Hai Phong city. 450 parents of the HTPS students participated in the study. The data for the study was collected by these instruments: survey questionnaires and interviews with 22 parents. The research answers three questions: (1) Why do parents want their children to study English at primary school? (2) What do parents want their children to be taught at Primary school? and (3) How can parents help their children study at home? Results of the study showed that the parents expressed a generally positive view about the importance of early English language learning in Vietnamese contexts. Many stated that early childhood is an important time for EFL learning, and engaged in home teaching of English. The findings have implications for policy makers, early childhood educators, parents, primary English language teachers and the general public.

Nghiên cứu giao văn hóa về việc sử dụng các hiện tố phi ngôn từ trên lớp của giáo viên Mỹ và Việt

This study reviews the theoretical background, which explains the important role of nonverbal behavior in communication, especially in teaching and learning, to compare the nonverbal cues’ use between American teachers of English and Vietnamese teachers of English when interacting with their Vietnamese students. The specific areas exploded include eye contact, hand gestures and facial expressions which are the easiest actions the students can perceive clearly. The findings of the study briefly answer to the three questions that emphasized on how often the American and Vietnamese teachers of English use these nonverbal cues, in which specific situations and their students’ attitude to them. To collect data for the study, survey questionnaires and video-recorded observations were employed. In which, survey questionnaire is the main method of data analysis, the other just supported supplementing information whether data from survey was contradicted each other. After all, some suggested teaching implications would be drawn out.

Phân tích diễn ngôn phê phán về cách thể hiện cảm xúc bằng ngôn từ trong các bình luận bóng đá ở các tờ báo điện tử tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt

Nowadays, football is undeniably the most favourite sport in the world. It is not surprising that football commentaries in newspapers always interest readers. However, the sportswriters’ subjective ideas related to social inequalities displayed in these commentaries are really problematic because of their great effects on reader’s mind. This research is carried out on some of the most viewed online newspapers in English and Vietnamese. The collected data are analyzed on the basis of Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework for critical discourse analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional Grammar at the level of word and clause by Halliday. As a result, the research reveals the existence of sexism and nationalism embedded in verbal expressions showing sportswriter’s emotions and shows certain differences of these demonstrations in English and Vietnamese football commentaries. Moreover, the research discusses the reasons for the presence of these social inequalities. Hopefully, it will be the firm ground for further CDA research.

The thesis is focused on the linguistic features of Could, Would, May, Might as politeness markers in English. It is also aimed at investigating different types of mistakes commonly committed by students at Ninh Giang High School. Another focus of the thesis is the seeking of possible solutions to the problems encountered by students in using Could, Would, May, Might as politeness markers. Also, possible solutions to how the uses of Could, Would, May, Might should be most effectively taught are offered. In addition to these, suggestions for future research are provided.

Đánh giá chất lượng bài dịch tiếng Việt của tiểu thuyết “Nhật ký” (2010) do Petal Lê dịch theo mô hình của Peter Newmark

Nowadays, more and more foreign literary works have been translated into Vietnamese in order to meet the demand of readers. Therefore, to ensure that readers can take pleasure in the best of foreign literary works through their translations, it is crucial to control the quality of the published translated versions. In this minor study, with the purpose of assessing the quality of the translated version of The Notebook, the critic applies the model of Translation Quality Assessment proposed by Peter Newmark. The finding shows that the translation text has gained many achievements in conveying the novelist’s message; however, it still contains some mismatches between the original and the translated versions such as structure, vocabulary, etc. Based on those findings, some suggestions and implications for literary translation are offered.

Sự kì thị giới tính về ngôn ngữ trong sách giáo khoa tiếng Anh THPT hiện hành: tiếng Anh 10, tiếng Anh 11 và tiếng Anh 12

It has been proved that sexism exists in language as well as in language textbooks. Many studies on linguistic sexism in English as a foreign language (EFL)/ English as a second language (ESL) textbooks have been internationally published. However, very few in-depth studies on this topic have been carried out in Vietnam. Diep (2002) has been an exception but he has just investigated sexism in language in general so linguistic sexism in particular materials such as school English textbooks has been still left blank.

This study on linguistic sexism in current Vietnamese upper secondary school English language textbooks : Tiếng Anh 10, Tiếng Anh 11 and Tiếng Anh 12 was aimed at finding out how often linguistic sexism occurs in these textbooks and uncovering the hidden messages conveyed through this linguistic sexism. The study used the content analysis method to discover the frequencies of occurrences of each category of linguistic sexism and the content of the messages transmitted via linguistic sexism in the English textbooks.



The results of the study showed that linguistic sexism occurs rather often in the three English textbooks and through it the messages of women’s low status are conveyed. This suggests that more attention should be paid on linguistic sexism so that it could be avoided in the textbooks because learners may suffer from negative effects if sexism or gender biases are present in their texts (Mineshima, 2008).

Nghiên cứu thực nghiệm về hiệu quả của các hoạt động đọc tự chọn đối với khả năng đọc của sinh viên không chuyên tiếng Anh trường Đại học Dân lập Hải Phòng

In order to promote students’ activeness as well as to enhance their reading proficiency, “an experimental study of the effect of the self-selected reading activities on Haiphong Private University’s English non-major’s reading proficiency” is carried out. Quasi-experimental design is the main research method employed in this study to find out the answer about students’ progress after the implementation of the research. In addition, so as to get students’ feedback on the effect of self-selected reading activities, a survey questionnaire is designed to search needed information. The study shows positive results with the progress of students in experimental group. Besides, students express their interest as well as satisfaction to self-selected reading activities through student questionnaire.

Nghiên cứu thái độ của giáo viên và sinh viên đối với nội dụng văn hóa trong giáo trình quốc tế dành cho sinh viên không chuyên trường Đại học Dân lập Hải Phòng

The study investigates the cultural content of the textbook Solutions Pre-intermediate Students’ Book used for non-English majors at Haiphong Private University and the attitudes of students and teachers towards that content. The analysis of the cultural content was based on two criteria – one of Cortazzi and Jin (1999) and the other of Byram (1989). Survey questionnaire and interview were used to collect information from students and teachers. Via the data, convergences and divergences between students’ and teachers’ attitudes were drawn. The findings showed that Solutions Pre-intermediate Students’ Book was the textbook on target culture with the British and American culture dominantly presented. All the teachers and most of the students expressed positive attitudes towards the cultural content of the book although there were a number of students saying no to learning culture. However, the teachers’ teaching of cultures did not meet the students’ need. The results suggested that some negative attitudes of students need to be recognized and changed as soon as possible. Moreover, the university authority need take more consideration in choosing an international commercial book to be a textbook. They also need undertake an investigation into the effectiveness of the new learning and teaching method being applied, which prevented teachers from satisfying students’ need, with the teachers’ and students’ voice involved. It is hoped that these findings provide useful criteria for an expanding discussion of cultural issues in ELT.

Phân tích diễn ngôn sử dụng trong các khẩu lệnh hàng hải về mặt hành động lời nói

Effectiveness in communications is an ingredient to safe and efficient ship operations. To maintain this effectiveness, marine orders, one of the most important factors of communication at sea, must be precise, simple and unambiguous to avoid confusions and error. With an aim to investigate more about the effectiveness of these marine orders, 190 marine orders used on board and in external communications were collected and analyzed quantitatively in terms of speech acts categories, directness, type of sentence, length and density of nautical terms. Based on the data analysis of these linguistic features, the similarities and differences between the orders used on board and in external communications are unveiled. Finally, all of these analyses and findings are summed up to make the most general and concise conclusions about the effectiveness of marine orders used in communications at sea.

Nghiên cứu yếu tố ảnh hưởng đến sự sẵn sàng giao tiếp bằng tiếng Anh của sinh viên trong lớp học

Willingness to communicate (WTC) has gained an increasing amount of attention in the area of second language acquisition (SLA). Despite the rich findings from previous researches, most of the previous studies have been conducted in Western countries. Until recently, little research related to WTC has been conducted in a foreign language learning (EFL) context where there is usually no immediate linguistic need for learners to use English in their daily life. The present study aimed to examine the extent to which the students are willing to communicate in English in the classroom according to their self-report, and factors that might affect the students’ willingness to communicate in an English as a foreign language context. A mixed-method approach design was employed in order to explore the different aspects of WTC construct. Data was collected through a questionnaire and interviews. The participants, 120 Vietnamese tertiary students, completed the WTC questionnaire. Follow-up interview were then conducted with 16 participants. The findings of this study shows that students’ WTC is a complex issue because it is affected by multiple factors related to the nature of classroom tasks, the students’ proficiency level and other learner factors. A number of factors that appeared to affect their WTC in classroom were identified as: self-confidence, language attitude, self-perceived L2 proficiency, motivation and personality. The results of this study contribute to the theoretical foundation and methodology of the WTC construct. This study also provided pedagogical implications for offering valuable information for the purpose of teachers’ reflection and classroom practice. The limitations of this study and suggestions for future research were also identified.
