Nghiên cứu động lực học tiếng Anh của sinh viên trong Cao đẳng Kinh tế đối ngoại

English is assigned in the curricula at almost all colleges and universities in Vietnam. In fact, Vietnam gains little success in ELT, especially at public schools. One of the reasons for this unexpected fact is related to students’ attitudes and motivation in learning English. This is also the concern of the researcher who is teaching at College of Foreign Economic Relations (COFER). The researcher will carry out a survey at his institution to find out the answers for the question – What is COFER students’ motivation level in learning English? 85 students in two classes of English 1 are intended to participate in the survey. The researcher will gather data from questionnaires and the final test of the subject English 1. The students’ motivation in learning English will be analyzed via the findings from questionnaires. Besides, the researcher determines the relationship between students’ motivation and their learning achievement with the data from questionnaires and the test. The researcher hopes to reveal the current situation related to students’ motivation at his college in order to complete his teaching job better.

Việc áp dụng phương pháp giảng dạy CLT: Những khoảng cách giữa lý thuyết và thực hành của giáo viên tại trường Cao đẳng Bách Việt

Since the importance and requirement to communicate in English cannot be declined, in the current trend of improving quality education, many EFL countries in general and Vietnam in particular have changed from traditional grammar-based teaching method into communicative-focused approach. However, some studies has reported that there is still has a gap between the theory of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) and classrooms’ actual practices. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the teachers’ theoretical knowledge of CLT, their understandings about CLT and their practices into their classrooms when applying CLT at Bach Viet College (BVC). Besides, this qualitative study also tries to investigate some challenges that prevent these teachers from implementing CLT into English classrooms at BVC.

Nghiên cứu về việc hướng dẫn và áp dụng chiến lược nghe tại trung tâm Anh ngữ ở Việt Nam

Derived from the nature of listening strategies, unconscious activities of learners but conscious of teachers, in combination with the researcher’s challenges in teaching listening, the research is implemented to investigate listening strategy instructions and applications. Research question that decides content of the research is how listening strategies are instructed and applied in EFL class. It was carried out in Europe-Vietnam Language School where learners are motivated by their apparent learning purposes. Six participants contain three EFL teachers and three EFL students from the teachers’ classes. Two instruments used were observation and stimulated recall. As a result, despite teachers’ different preferences of using strategies, learners only get familiar with cognitive and social-affective strategies. Their weaknesses found were their inability in controlling listening processes, problems in pronunciation, and difficulties in building up learning spirit due to their passive learning style. With the investigation into the reality of using listening strategies, the research is in the hope to help teachers and learners remedy their current strategy use with the help of their private school.

Phát triển kĩ năng nói của học viên nhỏ tuổi thông qua quan điểm tri nhận tại tường Ngoại ngữ và tin học Đại Tây Dương

This research aims to develop speaking skill of young learners through Cognitive perspectives at Atlantic English Language & Informatics School ( ALIS). The participants were 18 primary school students including 10 females and 8 males aged from 7 to 10 years old. They studied three lessons a week (each lesson lasts 90 minutes) and all the learners had been learning English at ALIS for eight months. This study focused on the development of young learners’ speaking skill at ALIS by applying one of cognitive strategies in teaching process. The author hopes that this study will help students develop their English speaking skill in a natural way through the use of pictures.

Teaching L2 composition is not an easy task for L2 teachers since it is affected by the culture and writing conventions of the native speakers. In an attempt to seek an alternative method to teach L2 writing, this paper reports the results of the empirical study in which the model-based approach/model-based teaching was applied to teach English composition to the Vietnamese 10th graders. The study employed questionnaire, direct observation, reflective portfolio and cross-case analysis technique to discover various aspects of using the teaching approach in a Vietnamese context. The results suggest that the teaching technique could be used productively in the Vietnamese EFL environment. Several suggestions for applying the model-based approach into other similar pedagogical settings are provided.

This study is to design supplementary activities to enhance the students’ listening skill after investigating problems of teaching English listening skills by a survey questionnaire for 40 eleventh-form students, interview questions and the observation sheet for teachers of English. English tests and teaching diaries are also carried out to elicit hidden reasons behind participants’ answers in the questionnaires and to help me draw a vivid picture of a listening lesson as well. From the results inferred in the analysis, I designed supplementary activities to make teaching and learning English listening skills more effective.

Đánh giá các bài tập đọc hiểu trong sách tiếng Anh 12 dựa trên các bài tập nghĩa đên và nghĩa suy luận

Reading comprehension is emphasized in English instruction in upper secondary schools. The reading comprehension section in the textbook TIENG ANH 12 presents a reading text which is followed by different comprehension tasks to provide students with reading comprehension practices. As a teacher who uses this textbook, I had the feeling that the balance between literal and inferential tasks was problematic. This feeling motivated me to conduct this study reported here. The study was designed to seek an answer to the general question: “To what extent does the TIENG ANH 12 adequately prepare students for doing the two tasktypes?”. I used the criteria of Barrett’s taxonomy to identify and evaluate the reading task types presented in the TIENG ANH 12 with a focus on the adequacy of two major task types: literal and inferential comprehension. The results reveal that while the reading comprehension tasks the textbook cover both these task types, the literal comprehension tasks seemed to dominate This raises the need for teachers to supplement inferential comprehension tasks in an attempt to prepare the students better for the examination for the General Secondary Education Diploma as well as the National University Entrance Examination.

Lo lắng trong kỹ năng đọc tiếng Anh chuyên ngành Y tại trường Cao đẳng y tế Thanh Hóa

Why do most students suffer from anxious and stressful feeling while reading English for Medicine texts? What makes them have that kind of emotions? The author took a random – selected sample of 146 second year students at Thanh Hoa Medical College. Data from the questionnaire and semi-structured interview were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The study confirms that the students were anxious in EMP reading classes. There were two aspects of EMP reading anxiety: Personal factors and text feature factors.Worrying about reading effect and unknown vocabulary are the most frequently causes of anxiety under the aspect of personal factors and text feature factors, respectively. After the investigation, some solutions are proposed to partially reduce anxiety and discomfort among students in their EMP reading lessons, and gain their motivation. Implications and recommendations for further researches were considered.

Ứng dụng công nghệ thông tin trong việc dạy từ vừng tiếng Anh Y học cho sinh viên năm thứ hai trường Cao đẳng y tế Thanh Hóa

The aims of the study are to investigate the challenges the teachers encounter in applying PowerPoint in teaching medical vocabulary and to find out solutions to help the teachers enhance the effectiveness of EMP vocabulary teaching at Thanh Hoa Medical College (TMC). The subjects involved in this study are ten teachers of English from Foreign Language Division and 200 students from TMC. Interviews and questionnaires are the instruments used to collect the data during five months of the study. The survey results highlight the positive effect and necessity of using PowerPoint in teaching EMP vocabulary to improve students' Medical terms competence. The results show both teachers and students have positive attitude toward application of PowerPoint in EMP vocabulary teaching and learning process. In addition, this work will hopefully be a reliable source of reference for teachers of English in general to develop teaching methods and PowerPoint application in class in particular.

Nghiên cứu khám phá về nhũng yếu tố ảnh hưởng đến sự thể hiện kỹ năng nói của học sinh trường Trung cấp Nghề ở thành phố Thanh Hóa

The focus of this research aims to investigate the factors affecting students’ performance in English speaking class room with the first - year students at The Vocational school of Thanh Hoa city. To achieve these aims, both quantitative and qualitative research approaches were employed. The data was collected via a number of instruments including: questionnaires for students and teachers and a class observation for students. The major findings of the research showed that the factors affecting students’ speaking performance in English speaking classroom consist of four categories: student’s factor, teachers’ factor, classroom’s factor. The study also demonstrated that among 4 main factors, the students’ factor was proved to be the most affected whereas teacher’s factor was ranked as second. Based on the findings of the study, some discussion and implications were made along with recommended suggestions for further research

The interrelationship between language and culture results in the fact that cultural knowledge plays a very important role in the process of learning English verb tenses and aspects. Therefore, the awareness of an important cross-cultural category Accuracy – Inaccuracy will help students use English more appropriately. The thesis focuses on the influence of this category on learning verb tenses and aspects of 90 10th form students at Dong Son I High School through a test and informal interviews with 6 students and with 2 teachers to find out the problems students have in learning English tense and aspect. Based on the findings, some suggestions for the teaching of English as a foreign language will be given with the hope that they will contribute to improve students’ learning English verb tenses and aspects.

This study aims at evaluating on the effectiveness of listening comprehension tasks in the textbook English 10 to improve students’ listening comprehension. The subjects involved in the study are students and three teachers at Quang Xuong I High School, Thanh Hoa. The thesis primarily aims at the emphasis of this research work is largely practical in the light of theoretical aspects through literature review, results of task evaluation, interview and some suggested activities to improve students’ listening skill. Findings from task evaluation and interview show the effectiveness of listening comprehension tasks in teaching English listening skill at Quang Xuong I high school in Thanh Hoa province. Based on the results of the research, it is hoped that the findings as well as suggestions will be helpful for designers who design English textbook and teachers when using the new sets of English textbook in general and English 10 in particular so as for them to improve their students’ listening comprehension.

This research was done to investigate the use of Vietnamese translation in vocabulary teaching and learning process. This action research is aimed at finding out the teachers and students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of Vietnamese translation in teaching and learning vocabulary at Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City – Thanh Hoa branch. The study focuses on issues (1) the difficulties encountered by English teachers as well as the second year vocational students at IUH – Thanh Hoa Branch when teaching and learning technical vocabulary. (2) Exploring translation used in teaching technical vocabulary for the second year vocational students at IUH – Thanh Hoa Branch. (3) Investigating how far translation improves teaching and learning technical vocabulary for the second year vocational students at IUH – Thanh Hoa Branch. This study involves the participants of 170 second – year vocational students who are in their first semester at IUH. The data was collected by a number of instruments including questionnaire for teachers and students, teacher’s observation, informal interviews. The result of the study reveals that there exist some difficulties in teaching technical vocabulary to second-year vocational students at IHU. However, the majority of respondents confirm that Vietnamese translation technique is an efficient method. Vietnamese translation has big attributions in diminishing the difficulties in teaching technical vocabulary to second-year vocational students at IHU

This study is an attempt to explore the reality of the teaching and learning of speaking skill to grade 12 students at Qủang Xương I Upper – Secondary school in Thanh Hóa. In the study, the researcher conducted some activities such as observing the classroom and interviewing both teachers and students after the speaking lesson

to gain understanding of how speaking lessons were conducted in the classroom and find out the common interaction patterns in the English-speaking lessons in the researched school. These job titles are then transcribed and decribed in in terms of responsibilities to look for latent emphases and interpreted the reflections.The results of the study is to present the view of teaching and learning English speaking skill. Based on the findings, the thesis provides some reflections on teaching and learning speaking skill,which would be of great help for teachers and learners at the researched secondary school.

This study investigated the perceived reading strategies by grade 10 students at Lê Viết Tạo High School in replication of the study conducted by Mebratu Mulatu Bachore (2014). The population of the study comprised 180 grade ten students and three English teachers at Lê Viết Tạo High School. The data were obtained through not only students' questionaire consisting of 30 items probing three categories: Meta cognitive, cognitive and Affective/social reading strategies but also teachers’ interviews.

On the basis of the information obtained from teachers and students’ perceived use of English reading strategies, suggestions on how to improve English reading for grade 10 students at Lê Viết Tạo High School are made.

This study is conducted in an attempt to explore the effective writing tasks for the second year students at State Commercial No School in Thanh Hoa. The author used action research methodology to investigate the students’ work effectiveness on each tasks. The findings of the study reveal that the tasks including Complete gapped paragraphs with target structures/ texts, Reorganize jigsaw texts or scrambled sentences, Combine sentences provided in materials are the most effective tasks for the students while the other two which are Practice construction of simple and complex sentences, Create a text using visual information seem to be obstacles for students to complete. Some recommendations are then drawn up based on the findings for the teaching writing skill at school.

It is common knowledge that vocabulary is a very important language element in any languages. However, the teaching and learning vocabulary at Hoằng Hóa (HH) high school is far from satisfactory. The current study investigates vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) used by the tenth-form students at HH high school. The questionnaires were given to participants to find out their perception of teaching and learning vocabulary. To achieve these aims, both quantitative and qualitative research approaches were employed to explore what strategies commonly used by the tenth-form students at HH high school. The data was collected via a number of instruments including: questionnaires for students, an interview and a class observation for teachers .The results of the study stated that both HH high school teachers and learners are correctly aware of the importance of teaching and learning English vocabulary. Furthermore, many vocabulary strategies were used both in teaching and learning vocabulary with high frequency.

Focusing on using dictionaries in learning and teaching English at Lam Son gifted high school, the study is aimed at surveying the actual using of dictionaries in learning and teaching English to find out the optimal way to use dictionaries. The action research was designed and implemented in the second semester of the school year 2013-2014 with the participation of 80 students from 10A and 11A. The data was collected by a number of instruments including questionnaire for students, teacher’s observation, and pre – test and post – test. The results of the study present many students’ problems and difficulties on using dictionaries in learning English. Based on those findings, the thesis provides some implications for pedagogy to help the learners and teacher in choosing the useful and suitable dictionary in general secondary schools as well as private Lam Son gifted school.

Focusing on learning and teaching English speaking skill at the Foregin Language Department, Hong Duc University, this action research is aimed at working out an effective supplementary learning activity to improve students’ speaking competence. After carrying out preliminary investigation and literature review, it is found out that project based learning is one of the effective methods used largely by teachers to teach speaking skill in English language learning. In an attempt to examine the best way to apply PBL to teach speaking skill to the second year English majored students at Hong Duc University, the study focuses on issues (1) Students’ difficulties in learning speaking English (2) Factors motivating students in speaking lesson-using project work (3) How project work improved students’ English speaking competence?The speaking guide project was then designed and implemented in the second semester of the school year 2011-2015 with the participation of 30 students from K15. The data was collected by a number of instrument including questionnaire for students, teacher’s observation, pre – test and post – test. The result of the study indicates that most of the students had positive attitudes towards the application of PBL activities in speaking lessons. PBL activities have big attributions in creating contexts atmosphere for students to practice speaking in English. As a result, there was great improvement in their speaking performance.

Nghiên cứu khám phá động cơ học kỹ năng nói tiếng Anh của học sinh dân tộc thiểu số trường Dự bị Đại học Dân tộc Sầm Sơn

This study aims at exploring ethnic minority students’ motivation in studying English speaking skills at Sam Son Ethnic Pre-university School. The study was conducted with one hundred students of three groups A, B, C by completing a set of survey questionnaire and with six students among whom by attending a focused group interview. On the basis of data analysis, the findings, first of all, showed two kinds of motivation possessed by the ethnic students which are the instrumental and integrative motivation. Secondly, some factors affecting their motivation in the learning process of the speaking skill were found from the data, which are student factors, teacher factors as well as classroom factors and the textbook. The extent to which these factors affect students’ motivation are then discussed. Finally, some strategies and techniques to motivate ethnic students at Pre-university schools in general and at Sam Son Ethnic Pre-university School in particular to speak English more effectively were suggested and recommended.

Phân tích lỗi sử dụng mạo từ tiếng Anh của học sinh lớp 10 trường THPT Quảng Xương 3, Thanh Hóa

This study aims at providing a comprehensive account of the types of errors produced by the 10th graders at Quảng Xương 3 High School (QXHS) in their use of articles, based on the Surface Structure Taxonomies (SST) of errors. Data were collected from written samples of 100 10th grade students at QXHS. The students were given forty-five minutes to write on one of four topics appropriate with their level. Analysis of errors in the students’ written samples revealed that omission errors were the most frequent (49.83%), followed by errors in addition (43.14%), and substitution errors were (7.02%) the least. Furthermore, the results shows that the errors root from both inter- lingual and intra- lingual sources. From the data analysis results, pedagogical implications were given to solve the problems.

Sự hài hước trong tập truyện cười Stories for Reproduction của L.A Hill và khả năng sử dụng tập truyện vào giảng dạy tiếng Anh cho học sinh trường Trung cấp Thủy sản Thanh Hóa

This study is an attempt to uncover ways of humor creation in the collection Elementary Stories for Reproduction by L.A. Hill from both of linguistic and socio-cultural perspectives. It provides learners of English with better understanding of English jokes and funny stories. To complete this research, the theoretical background of the factors creating humor is worked out for the interpretations. The findings from the analysis have revealed the typical features that cause laughter in the collection. Finally, the study suggests some interesting activities designed for English language teaching and learning with the aim to use jokes as a useful material to motivate students. Therefore, learners of English can understand and make full use of funny stories to make English learning less challenging.

Thúc đẩy kỹ năng đọc hiểu cho học sinh lớp 10 trường THPT Thạch Thành 3 qua việc điều chỉnh các hoạt động đọc của sách giáo khoa tiếng Anh lớp 10

Reading lessons for the 10th form students at Thach Thanh 3 high school have been observed to be not interesting and rewarding due to the challenging reading tasks in the textbook. The aim of this study, hence, is to explore whether using task adaptation can be effective in assisting students in their reading lessons, so they can understand the content of reading materials with less frustration. Survey questionnaire, classroom observation and interviews were the main instrument of data collection which were delivered to 76 grade 10 students to collect their responses to the adapted lesson. The result indicated that students are more interested in the reading as the original tasks were adapted in combination with using communicative games. And when the tasks become less difficult and more interesting to most students, they developed a fairly high degree of motivation towards practicing reading. Besides, the study suggests some adapted reading activities and tasks for teachers to utilize to increase the effectiveness of English reading lessons when applied to the textbook English 10 to teach the 10th form students at Thach Thanh 3 high school.

Những khó khăn trong việc học từ vựng tiếng Anh của học sinh lớp 9, trường THCS Chu Văn An, Thanh Hóa

No doubt that vocabulary is a significant factor in language acquisition since words play an important role in expressing our feeling, emotions, and ideas to others during the act of communication. However, learning vocabulary is really a big challenge for students in learning a foreign language. The aims of this study are to find out difficulties in learning English vocabulary of the 9th form students at Chu Văn An secondary school and suggest possible solutions to help them overcome those difficulties. To achieve these aims, a survey research was conducted to 130 students of Chu Văn An secondary school by means of questionnaire, an informal interview with 3 English teachers of the school and classroom observation were also used as tools to clarify the information from the students. The findings from data analysis show that the difficulties were caused by both internal factors and external factors. The internal factors are such factors coming from the students themselves as, their lack of motivation and effective ways to learn vocabulary and also their natural characteristics of young age. The external factors are English learning environment, vocabulary learning task and lack of time for studying English. These factors affected and caused difficulties for students in learning vocabulary process. The study gives some solutions to deal with these factors including encouraging students’self- study, providing students with learning vocabulary strategies and improving various techniques in teaching vocabulary

Sử dụng minh họa để dạy từ vựng tiếng Anh chuyên ngành điều khiển cho học sinh năm thứ nhất trường Trung cấp Thủy sản

This thesis is carried out with the aim to: (1) investigate the effectiveness of using illustrations to teach ESP vocabulary to the first-year navigation students, (2) investigate teachers’ and students’ attitudes towards the application of illustrations in teaching ESP vocabulary. To achieve the given aims of the study, a questionnaire for students and an interview for teachers have been designed to collect information from 100 navigation students and five teachers of English after applying three lesson plans to two classes. The results indicate that both the teachers and the students enjoy the use of illustrations in teaching and learning ESP vocabulary. They highly appreciate the benefits of illustrations during teaching and learning processes. Besides, some of them are also coping with various difficulties during teaching and learning ESP vocabulary through illustrations.

Motivation plays a crucial role in learning a foreign language. This study was conducted to define the dominant motivational orientations among the students selected for the National English Proficiency Contest at Lam Son Gifted High School and explore the relationship between motivation and their learning achievement. Narrative frames and interviews were employed with a view to answering the above-mentioned objectives. The finding results show that the students are motivated to learn English by both intrinsic and extrinsic orientations, in which the latter has more powerful impact on their achievement and that there is a positive correlation between motivation and achievement. The findings also suggest implications for those involved in pedagogical activities including teachers and parents and students themselves.

This study investigates the real situation of teachers’ exploitation of pair work and group work activities in teaching theoretical linguistics subjects with the major aim to increase motivation for the 2nd year English major students at Hồng Đức University. To achieve the above objectives, qualitative and quantitative research methods are used, including the use of questionnaires and class observation. By analyzing the data collected statistically and interpretatively, the strength and weakness of teachers in employing these activities to motivate students are identified. The study proposes and offers useful teaching strategies and suggestions for bettering the situation.

Những yếu tố ảnh hưởng đến việc đọc hiểu tiếng Anh chuyên ngành Du lịch của học sinh năm thứ hai trường Trung cấp Thương mại TW5

The aims of this study are to identify the factors affecting second-year students' reading comprehension in English for Tourism at State Commercial No5 School (SCS) and suggest possible solutions to help students study ESP reading more effectively. The study was undertaken with 50 second-year students of Tourism and three ESP teachers at SCS. On the basic of analysis of the data, the findings show that the major factors affecting second-year students' reading comprehension in English for Tourism are reading skills, language, cultural background knowledge and reading habits and motivation. Some solutions are suggested to deal with these factors including increasing students’ interest and motivation in reading, training students to become readers with efficient reading skill, encouraging students to develop extensive reading habit and motivation, giving homework and checking the previous lessons frequently, improving teachers’ professional knowledge, helping students to improve their cultural knowledge and developing the reading materials.

The study was carried out with the participation of 90 students in class 10C1 and 10C7 at Triệu sơn High School No 2 in the second semester of the school year 2013 - 2014. The study re-asserts that extracurricular activities are very useful for students to improve

their English skills, especially speaking skills. Besides, they can develop other skills such as: teamwork skills, skill of presenting in front of large audience, etc. More importantly,  students are more interested in speaking lessons in class. This suggests that extracurricular activities like these can be well integrated into the English teaching program at our own school and the like, which definitely will benefit both teachers and students alike.​

The study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of using a content-based approach to teaching English to students of environment major: an action research at Central College of Natural Resources and Environment. The specific objectives of the study were: (1) to examine the extent to which the attitude of students toward English skills and ESP at Central College of Natural Resources and Environment was changed following the application of the content-based approach to teaching Environmental English in their class, and (2) to investigate how effective the application of content-based instruction (CBI) was in helping students at Central College of Natural Resources and Environment learn Environmental English. The action research procedure was carried out on 32 students of Environment major from one class by the teacher in charge of the class, and one English teacher as an observer The effectiveness of the course was investigated by means of questionnaires completed by 32 students, their pre-test, post-test scores, and teachers’ observation. It was found that this application of a content-based approach had brought about positive results for the students at elementary level of English. It is to enrich students’ specific terms as well as develop their English skills related to environment major.

In recent times, the term Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), formerly identified as Critical Linguistics (CL), is used to refer to the critical linguistic approach of scholars, especially those who find the larger discursive unit of text to be the basic unit of communication. This research specifically considers two of John F. Kennedy’s speeches, namely his opening statement in the first presidential debate with Richard M. Nixon and his inaugural address on 20th January 1961. In the light of CDA, it is supposed that the research will testify to more or less the relations between language and ideology and/or power through the CDA of the mentioned speeches at two milestones in John F. Kennedy’s life.

Phát triển kỹ năng viết cho học sinh Trường THCS Kiên Thọ qua các câu chuyện cổ tích

This study has been conducted to display how effective fairy tales can assist to consolidate students’ knowledge of the English language as grammar and vocabulary and to promote their self-confidence and creative writing skills. Besides that, the author also mentions stories as a good motivation raise students’ interest in writing tasks. The study has been conducted on 60 eighth-form students at Kien Tho Secondary School. In order to obtain these students’ opinion concerning the use of fairy tales and their effectiveness toward the writing instruction, a questionnaire was designed as one of data collection tools. Some open questions were implemented to interview three experienced colleagues of the researcher about their attitudes and the results after they have employed fairy tales into writing class. In addition, the researcher has done three experimental tests (one pre-test and two post-tests) with 30 among 60 students so as to measure how progress they are compared to the tests with other common texts. The findings from data analysis has shown that most of the students not only have positive attitudes toward fairy tales but realize their feasible effects on creating a relaxed learning environment and on improving students’ writing proficiency as well. Base on findings of the study, the researcher also supplies some suggestions about the selection of appropriate stories, how to use fairy tales in learning writing and the employment of a three-stage model of a writing process with the aim at developing students’ writing skills.

Thiết kế chương trình đọc hiểu tiếng Anh chuyên ngành cho sinh viên năm thứ 3 Khoa Kế toán tại trường CĐ Tài nguyên và Môi trường miền Trung

This study is aimed at designing an ESP reading syllabus for the third-year students of accounting at the Central Regional College of Natural Resources and Environment. The study begins with the review of theoretical background concerning areas of ESP, syllabus design and needs analysis. It continues with the teaching and learning context at the CRCNRE, then an investigation of target needs and learning needs to identify areas to be developed in the syllabus. The data collection instruments manipulated is questionnaires, discussion and interviews. The data were collected from different sources: the ESP teachers, the subject teachers, the third-year students of Accounting and the working accoutants in NRE sector. After the data were carefully analyzed, the author decided to choose a topic-based syllabus. Based on the results of the needs analysis, an ESP reading syllabus is proposed. The syllabus is supposed to enrich students’ specific terms as well as develop their reading skills to enable them to comprehend reading materials related to accounting and accomplish relevant simple tasks in the job as accountants in the natural resources and environment sector.

Áp dụng đường hướng viết như một quá trình đề nâng cao kỹ năng viết cho học sinh lớp 12, trường THPT Quảng Xương 1

This study investigates the effectiveness of using writing process in improving 12th graders’ writing skill at Quảng Xương 1 high school. The study addresses students’ participation in the cycle of writing activities for a writing task, their improvement in writing ability, together with useful implications to the teaching of writing skill at upper-secondary schools. To achieve these aims, twenty students of 12th form class took part in the study. Each student had to write three drafts, so sixty drafts were collected to be evaluated and analyzed. The findings of the research show that the implementation of writing process in teaching writing can improve students’ writing quality. Students made many errors in writing aspects in the first drafts. However, after having received teacher’s feedback and rewrote the drafts, the result in the final drafts is that most students had produced good organization, good content and correct use of vocabulary, language use and mechanics. The study suggests that the teacher’s feedback provided on the students’ writing in the process of writing would be more helpful by feedback sheet. Therefore, teachers have to have appropriate methods to inspire learners’ motivation.

This paper deals with English grammar teaching of teachers at Vietnamese primary schools. Aspiring to find out the reasons for the problem that young students often meet difficulties in remembering and using English structures, I conducted a case study with the participation of two teachers at Anh Dung primary school to investigate their real grammar teaching. Through different instruments such as teacher interview, class observation, and questionnaire for students, some interesting facts about teachers’ awareness and teaching methodology were drawn out. From those findings, this paper suggested some suitable techniques that teachers can apply in their English classroom in order to improve the quality of grammar teaching.

Nghiên cứu về phát triển ngôn ngữ cho học sinh trường Tiểu học Đoàn Xá thông qua điệu ca, bài hát và trò chơi

The aim of this thesis is to find out the effectiveness of using chants, songs and games in teaching language in general and teaching vocabulary in particular. The researcher also tries to find out the most effective ways of using chants, songs and games to teach language for the third-grade students at Doan Xa Primary schools.

In order to reach the aims of the thesis, the author used the following data collection instruments: survey questionnaire for teachers, survey questionnaire for students and tests for students.

The results and findings show that students’ vocabulary improves considerably after learning English through chants, songs and games. Furthermore, the findings also point out that in the lessons using chants, songs and games, teachers should design a variety of tasks such as gap-filling, multiple choice, ticking true or false to enhance students’ vocabulary. Teachers should also choose chants, songs and games from various sources such as internet, CD, VCD or television to attract students’ concentration.

Cải thiện vốn từ vựng của sinh viên thông qua các hướng dẫn dựa trên nội dung

This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the use of content-based instructions on first year students’ vocabulary retention at Ha Long College of Arts, Culture and Tourism. It made a comparison between a traditional method of teaching vocabulary with translation, spelling, the phonemic transcription and a new method involving content-based instructions to find out how students could memorize the words they learnt more effectively.

The observation was carried out in 06 weeks of the second semester of the first year and was divided into 12 lessons. The subjects were 45 students of a class of the Hotel and Restaurant Department NVDL K13. The class received the treatment involving content-based instructions and observed by the author, who entered every necessary information in her diary. Vocabulary tests, including pre-test, progress test and post-test, were administered. The data collected from the test scores were analyzed to measure the size of vocabulary that students could retain.

The result showed considerable improvement in word memorization of the students in the class. The findings of the study also indicated that content-based instructions should be used for future vocabulary learning. Some implications and recommendations for the future studies were also included.

Nghiên cứu hành động nhằm nâng cao khả năng tự tin trong nói tiếng Anh của học sinh lớp 9 tại trường THCS Nguyễn Bá Ngọc

This research is conducted with the purpose to improving students’ confidence in speaking skill at Nguyen Ba Ngoc Lower Secondary School. The subjects of the study are 65 ninth graders of Nguyen Ba Ngoc Lower Secondary School. The data are collected through talks with colleagues, students’ pre- questionnaire and post- questionnaires and analysis of the textbook. The research was conducted during the first semester of the school year.

The study shows that most students at Nguyen Ba Ngoc Lower Secondary School experience many difficulties in speaking English. They are not confident when they speak or talk with their teachers and their friends. To make situation better, an action plan was made which focus on using warm up activities, group work and project - based activities to help students to improve speaking skill.



I hope that the study will be helpful to English teachers who share the same aspiration to help students to solve their problems in improving their students’ confidence in speaking English.
