A Study on Teacher's Difficulties in Teaching Writing Skill to the 11th Grade at a School in Bac Giang (Nghiên cứu về những khó khăn của giáo viên trong việc dạy kỹ năng viết cho học sinh lớp 11 tại một trường THPT ở Bắc Giang)


In an attempt to investigate teachers’ problems in teaching writing skills to 11graders at a high school in Bac Giang, the study was aimed at finding out: (1) the dificulties teachers might encounter in the teaching process of the skills; (2) factors causing their difficulties.

The study has been conducted in the form of a survey research, with the subjects were 6 English teachers. The classroom observation was the main instruments employed for the data collection. These teachers were also invited to join interviews. The research reveals that teachers’ time management and teaching methods should really be taken into consideration. Besides, the data from the study confirm the fact that the students’ laziness and negative attitudes towards writing lessons all made it difficult for the teachers in teaching process. In addition, large size classes with multi-level students are also made the situation worse.



For those reasons, the study finally recommends some implications to help improve the quality of teaching and learning writing.

An Investigation into the Application of Pair Work and Group Work in 11th Grade Speaking Lessons at Van Noi High School (Điều tra việc áp dụng hoạt động nhóm và đôi cho học sinh lớp 11 trong các giờ học nói tại trường THPT Vân Nội)


Pair work and group work are typical organizational features of CLT classroom. They bring many benefits for both teachers and students. Applying pair and group work to teaching and learning speaking skill is very important. But how are these activities are perceived and used by teachers and students? And what are the difficulties in using them? With the aim of finding out the reality of applying pair and group work, this study was conducted with 84 11th grade students at Van Noi high school. A combined questionnaire was administered to discover the students’ understanding of pair and group work as well as their perception of the use of these activities in class. Interview was also delivered to teachers to investigate their application of pair and group work in class. The findings revealed that there were differences between students’ understanding and their perception of the use of pair and group work in class. The results also discovered that teachers themselves did not use these activities as appropriately as what they said. Both teachers and students agreed that they encountered difficulties when using pair and group work in class. Basing on the reality of teaching and learning, the researcher provides some suggested activities for better use of pair and group work in speaking skill.

An Investigation into the Correlation between Learners’ Attitudes towards Learning Listening and Their Listening Performance at Hanoi University of Business and Technology (Điều tra về mối quan hệ giữa thái độ học tập và khả năng nghe của sinh viên trường Đại học Kinh doanh và Công nghệ Hà Nội)


This paper reports the result of the study that aimed at identifying first-year and second-year students’ attitudes towards learning listening and the relation between these attitudes and learners’ listening performance at a university in Hanoi. Three issues, hence, are investigated: (1) the attitudes towards learning English in general and learning listening in particular; (2) the differences between two groups of students in terms of their attitudes; and (3) the relation between the attitudes to learning listening and their listening performance.

The findings based on a survey with 130 students reveal that there was an interest in learning English, but listening lessons and tasks, and course objectives beyond their level was a barrier to learning English. A lot of the assistance from the teacher with explanation on test format and scoring was appreciated. However, that they listened to no materials but listening sections in the course books is a hindrance to their listening performance. Though admitting that their listening results can influence their future performance, students’ gradual improvement in listening result was not ensured.

Secondly, there was distinction between first-year and second-year students regarding the acknowledgement of difficulties with listening comprehension, test relevance to the course objectives, teachers’ explanation to the test scoring criteria, and the agreement on the stimulus of good listening results over their later performance.

Thirdly, there was a relation between attitudes and listening performance. Interest in English and listening English and their performance in listening tests are intertwined. Learner’s real ability and the level of the tests influence their performance as well. A good resource of materials can be seen as another contribution to their performance.

A Study of Politeness Strategies in the Conversational Activities of the Course Book “Market Leader, Intermediate” (New Edition) (Nghiên cứu các chiến lược lịch sự được sử dụng trong các bài hội thoại của giáo trình tiếng Anh thương mại “Market Leader, Intermediate” (Tái bản)


The focus of this study is to investigate politeness strategies in conversational activities of the course book “Market Leader, Intermediate” (New edition). The research shows that the frequencies of politeness strategies occurrence in conversational activities of the material are not always the same. Among the four politeness strategies, negative politeness strategies are employed more frequently than positive politeness, bald-on-record and off-record strategy. Most politeness strategies are used in such conversational activities as making disagreements, agreements and requests. The author also suggests some recommendations that might work in the Vietnamese context to improve the teaching and learning of verbal communication for students at Hanoi University of Business and Technology.

Teachers and Students’ Attitude towards Using Games in Teaching and Learning Vocabulary (Quan điểm của giáo viên và học sinh với việc sử dụng trò chơi trong dạy-học từ mới)


This study has been conducted to investigate Teachers and Students’ Attitude towards Using Games in Teaching and Learning Vocabulary. The subjects of the study are thirty twelfth-grade students and thirty English teachers from different high schools in Chi Linh District, Hai Duong Province in the school year 2013 – 2014. The data have been collected via questionnaires. The findings exhibit that although language games enable teaching and learning vocabulary to be better, they are not often made use of in language classes. The study confirms that even though vocabulary games add interests and motivate students to learn, they have not got many opportunities to get involved in those activities. Although many high school teachers recognize the effectiveness of vocabulary games, the majority of them are not willing to design, or to conduct such activities for word teaching. Based on the findings, the researcher proposes some recommendations for teachers and students to teach and learn new words by using language games.

A Contrastive Analysis of English and Vietnamese Resignation Letters in Terms of Discourse Structure (Phân tích đối chiếu cấu trúc diễn ngôn của đơn thư từ chức trong tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt)


A resignation letter is one kind of business letters, which holds an important role in helping the employee to maintain a positive relationship with his/ her old boss, and paves the way for him or her to move on. However, this kind of letters does not receive much attention from the researchers in English and Vietnamese. Therefore, so as to help people have better understanding of resignation letters and see the similarities and differences in writing style of English and Vietnamese resignation letters, this thesis studies discourse structures of 20 resignation letters (10 in English and 10 in Vietnamese); then compares and contrasts them. The major methods used in this thesis are ‘move analysis’ approach, comparison and contrast methods. The result of the study shows that the structures of English and Vietnamese resignation letters are basically similar. They only have some differences in the length of the letters and the kinds of moves. From the result of the analysis, the characteristics of resignation letters both in English and Vietnamese can be clarified. Then, the knowledge of discourse structure of English and Vietnamese resignation letter can be applied in writing an effective and persuasive letter of resignation.

The Meaning and Structure of the Inaugural Address by John F. Kennedy in 1961: A Systemic Functional Analysis (Cấu trúc và ngữ nghĩa bài diễn văn nhậm chức của John F. Kennedy năm 1961: Phân tích theo quan điểm chức năng hệ thống)


This study applies systemic functional grammar to investigate the meaning and structure of the inaugural address by John F. Kennedy in 1961. Based on the framework of systemic functional grammar developed by Halliday, the study focuses on analyzing the text in terms of three metafunctions and cohesion. The findings reveal that in terms of transitivity, material process is predominant; in terms of mood, declarative mood is in the largest use; and in terms of theme, unmarked topical theme is the most notable feature. Both grammatical and lexical cohesion make the text cohesive and coherent. The analysis proves that this text is really meaningful, concise, and highly cohesive with the diversified uses of lexis and structures.

A Study on the Use of Task-based Approach in Teaching Speaking to the 2nd Year English Majored Students (Nghiên cứu việc sử dụng phương pháp dạy học theo đường hướng giao nhiệm vụ trong dạy học kỹ năng nói cho sinh viên năm thứ 2 chuyên tiếng Anh)


The focus of this study was on the use of task-based approach in teaching speaking for the 2nd year English majored students at Vietnam University of Commerce. A one group pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental design was employed with the participation of 40 students from English Faculty. The test results showed that the task-based approach had a positive impact on students’ speaking achievement after the experiment. Another instrument, the questionnaire, was administered to the participants in order to draw on qualitative data. The data revealed the positive consequences for significant changes in students’ learning attitude and motivation. The task-based project also welcomed favorable evaluations from the students that would be of great help to the future applications of task-based language teaching.

汉越视觉动词语义对比研究

ĐỐI CHIẾU NGỮ NGHĨA ĐỘNG TỪ THỊ GIÁC TIẾNG HÁN - VIỆT


本文是沿着结构语义学理论、语义场理论以及对比语言学理论对汉越视觉动词进行对比研究。此外,我们参考词典释义,结合采用贾彦德的义素分析法对汉越视觉动词的每个义位进行义素分析,发现汉越视觉动词在语义成分上既存在共性,又体现了显明的特殊性。核心语义成分决定这些动词的语义场归属,它们之间的差异通过区别性语义特征表现出来。汉越视觉动词义场的共性义素有两个:[视觉器官]、[动作],个性义素有七个:[仔细程度]、[远度]、[方式]、[客体]、[目的]、[情态]、[适用范围]等。通过对汉越视觉动词语义场的对比分析,我们发现义位之间存着义位对应、义位部分对应和义位空缺等三种语义关系。明确了汉越视觉动词的义位关系,就可以通过词汇或语法手段来解决相对应语义场内义位部分对应以及义位空缺的问题,这将有助于双语翻译及双语词典的编辑之作。

中越电视访谈节目主持人语言特点对比研究

Nghiên cứu so sánh đặc điểm ngôn ngữ người dẫn chương trình đối thoại

trên truyền hình Trung Quốc và Việt Nam


电视访谈节目上主持人所使用的语言即简洁又含蓄、即有口语性又不能太随俗。它对嘉宾及观众起着示范、引导的作用。其语言修养不仅影响到媒介形象,而且直接关系到民众的语言素养。为了执行电视访谈节目的礼貌与合作原则、达到引导作用,主持人需要使用多种多样的语言艺术,其中本论文最注重称呼词语、提问方式及比喻修辞艺术三大特点。本文通过中越电视访谈二十个节目以描写、分析、统计、对比等方法对这三大语言特点进行研究。通过一些图表指出中越电视访谈节目主持人使用每种语言艺术的频率及比例,从此得出可靠的结论。中越电视访谈节目主持人语言特点大同小异。本论文除了论文的主要部分外,还交上一本包含二十个中越电视访谈节目的语料书。希望论文得出的研究成果会对各语言研究者、老师和同学们作出绵薄的贡献,同时也为电视访谈节目有关行业的研究打下良好的基础。

Learners’ Attitudes towards Native and Nonnative English Speaking Instructors (Thái độ của người học đối với giáo viên dạy môn nói người bản ngữ và giáo viên người Việt)


This study investigated the learners’ attitudes towards teaching methods applied in speaking classes by native English speaking and non-native English speaking instructors in an English center in Hanoi. The research participants included 50 Vietnamese learners of various educational backgrounds. By administering a closed-ended and self-report questionnaires as well as semi-structured interviews, the study revealed that learners perceive considerable differences in the ways NES and NNES instructor apply teaching methods. Besides, generally NES instructors were perceived as better oral teachers. However, in terms of specific areas in teaching speaking namely grammar and learning strategies, students showed favorable attitudes to NNES instructors. On the other hand, NES instructors are preferred as pronunciation and vocabulary teachers.

An Exploratory Study on the Teaching of Pre-reading Skills to Third-year Non-English-major Students Using New Headway Pre-Intermediate Textbook at a University in Hanoi (Nghiên cứu thăm dò về việc dạy kỹ năng tiền đọc hiểu theo giáo trình New Headway Pre­-Intermediate cho sinh viên năm thứ ba không chuyên tiếng Anh tại một trường đại học ở Hà Nội)


In most cases a common problem students experience in reading classes is the feeling that they have inadequate knowledge about the subject they are reading about. However, this feeling may be more complex than generally thought. The problem may not be the lack of background knowledge, but rather the failure to activate that knowledge. Some researchers state that pre-reading activities provide a reader with necessary background to organize activities and to comprehend the material. Owing to the obvious awareness of the great importance of pre-reading activities to the teaching and learning of reading, the researcher decided to have a study on this issue. Firstly, she will take effort to explore what pre-reading activities are often applied by the teachers to teach third-year non-English-major students at the HAUI using the textbook New Headway Pre-Intermediate. Moreover, she would like to present her suggestions of some appropriate pre-reading activities with the hope of helping students have motivation in learning reading and improve their reading skills.

An Exploratory Study on the Teaching and Learning of Vocabulary by Second-year Students at Hanoi University of Business and Technology (Nghiên cứu thăm dò về việc dạy và học từ vựng tiếng Anh đối với sinh viên năm thứ hai tại Trường Đại học Kinh doanh và Công nghệ Hà Nội)


This research was set up to investigate English vocabulary strategies adopted by 2nd year students of Hanoi University of Business and Technology (HUBT) and the vocabulary learning strategies which teachers of English at HUBT teach their 2nd year students. The subjects were 30 teachers of English and 200 students who were teaching and learning at Hanoi University of Business and Technology. Two data collected instruments were used to gather the data: questionnaire, and observation. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results revealed that some distinctive strategies such as Memory strategies, Cognitive strategies and Determination strategies were frequently used to learn vocabulary among the learners. To conclude, the paper will discuss the implications of the findings and some pedagogical considerations for the teaching and learning of vocabulary.

Interpersonal Meaning in English and Vietnamese Job Advertisements: A Systemic-functional Comparsion (Nghĩa liên nhân trong quảng cáo tuyển dụng tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt: So sánh trên quan điểm chức năng hệ thống)


The study endeavors to make a contrastive analysis of the basic realization of interpersonal meaning in the discourse of English and Vietnamese job advertisements. Under the theoretical framework of Halliday’s systemic functional grammar, the three linguistic patterns: mood, modality and person system of thirty job advertisements have been scrutinized respectively. It is revealed that although English job advertisements and Vietnamese ones share a few similarities in terms of the realization of interpersonal meaning, there still exist certain disparities. The main similarities include preferred declarative mood, preferred first person pronouns and probability with the highest frequency. The major differences are as follows: English job advertisements employ more interrogatives and imperatives than the Vietnamese counterparts; the English samples use more obligation and personal pronouns than Vietnamese ones. It is expected that this study can be useful for both job advertisers and job hunters. It is also hoped that the findings in the research can be helpful for teaching writing, translating and serve as reference in ESL linguistics classes where SFG is introduced.

现代汉语“按照”与“根据”的对比及其越南语相对应表达形式考察研究

“按照”和“根据”这两个依据类介词的意义和用法比较相近,是汉语学习者较难掌握的介词类别之一。在实际运用中,这两个介词容易混淆,难以辨别。本论文在三个平面理论、对比语言学理论的指导下,采用考察、描写、分析、归纳等研究方法从语义、语法、语用等方面研究现代汉语介词“按照”、“根据”的特点,探讨两者之间的异同,进而考察“按照”、“根据”在越南语中的相对应表达方式并进行初步的对比。

论文的正文共分三章。第一章《绪论》简要介绍现代汉语介词、依据类介词的相关理论知识以及与课题的相关研究成果。第二章《现代汉语依据类介词“按照”和“根据”的对比分析》通过对现代汉语的多部权威词典以及大量的实际语料进行考察揭示“按照”和“根据”各方面的特点以及两者之间的异同。在语义方面,考察分析了两者的语义功能、介引宾语的结构特点及其语义的特点、与两者共现的谓语动词的语义特点;在语法方面,考察两者构成介词短语的语法功能,即充当句子成分的能力及其在句中的出现频率;在语用方面,考察分析两者的语用功能和语体色彩。第三章《‘按照’、‘根据’在越南语中的相对应表达形式之考察研究》通过所收集的语料对“按照”、“根据”在越南语中相对应的表达形式进行考察,并在此基础上对这两者在越南语的相对应表达形式进行初步的对比。

越南汉语教学初级阶段练习设计与利用现状考察——以河内经营与工艺大学为例

Thiết kế tài liệu dạy học tiếng Hán trong đó thiết kế bài tập chiếm một vị trí quan trọng trong công việc dạy học tiếng Hán. Luận văn chủ yếu tập trung nghiên cứu phần thực hành bài tập của ba quyển đầu tiên trong bộ giáo trình 6 quyển của Yang Jizhou. Trên cơ sở khảo sát các loại bài tập, số lượng bài tập, nội dung... của các bài luyện tập trong ba quyển giáo trình trên; đồng thời làm phiếu điều tra,phỏng vấn… sinh viên năm thứ nhất và giảng viên trực tiếp giảng dạy ta có thể biết được đánh giá của sinh viên và giảng viên về việc thiết kế tài liệu luyện tập trong giáo trình, qua đó có thể đưa ra những gợi ý trong việc sử dụng hiệu quả các bài tập để củng cố các kiến thức được học. Từ đó đề xuất một số cải tiến trong việc thiết kế và sử dụng bài tập luyện tập.

Design of Chinese teaching materials which design exercises constitute an important position in the Chinese teaching. The Dissertations primarily focuses on the practical exercises of the first four in the 6-volume curriculum of Yang Jizhou



On the basis of the survey the kinds of exercises the number of exercises, content, etc. of the exercise of the three-volume textbook on at the same time as the survey, interviews... first-year students and teachers directly teach we can know the reviews by students and faculty on the design of training material in the syllabus that could offer hints of the effective use of the exercises to consolidate the knowledge learned. From that proposed a number of improvements in the design and use training exercises. From that proposed a number of improvements in the design and use of training exercises.

Effectiveness of Teaching Grammar with the Use of Dictogloss for Students of K37A Maths Class, at Hanoi College of Education: An Action Research (Hiệu quả dạy ngữ pháp bằng phương pháp Dictogloss cho sinh viên lớp Sư phạm Toán 37A, Trường Cao đẳng Sư phạm Hà Nội: Nghiên cứu tác động)

This action research is aimed at examining the effects of dictogloss on the students’ grammatical competence and motivation for learning grammar. To fulfill this aim, 28 students of K37A Maths class and two teachers at Non-English major Division, HCE were choosen to take part in the 12-week research. Five instruments were employed, namely qualitative analysis of textbook, observation, tests (entry test, a pre-test and a post-test), questionnaires (a pre-questionnaire and a post questionnaire), and interviews in order to gather the data. The initial data indicated that the students’ poor grammatical competence and low motivation in learning grammar may be attributed to their exposure of uninteresting and linear teaching method in the class. By comparing initial and post-data, the analysis reveals that the use of dictogloss in the grammar lessons not only improves their grammatical competence but also their attitudes towards learning grammar.

The Effects of Teacher’s Differentiated Instructions Based on Students’ Learning Styles on Their Motivation (Ảnh hưởng của việc đa dạng hóa phương pháp giảng dạy của giáo viên dựa trên phong cách học cá nhân của sinh viên đối với động lực học)

Motivation which has a profound impact on students’ academic achievement at university is determined by a lot of factors. Among them, students’ learning style is one of the most important one. The correlation between motivation and learning styles has been documented in a lot of research.

This paper reports an action research undertaken in a reading course for second-year English majors in a university in Hanoi, Vietnam. Involving a group of twenty-six sophomores from the same class, this study aims to 1) identify the given class’s learning styles and current level of academic motivation; 2) project and implement some instructional differentiations upon the students’ different learning modalities aiming to improve their academic motivation; and 3) evaluate the impact of the psycho-pedagogical intervention on the students’ motivation level. Using two questionnaires, interviews with students, and researcher’s self-observation and reflection as the main research instruments, the study shows that these students had low current level of motivation which was probably caused by different learning preferences. Basing on the insight into the students’ learning styles, differentiated instructions were employed in hope to raise their motivation.

Students’ Attitudes towards Using Technology in Language Classes in Learning Pronunciation: A Survey at a Vietnam-based International School (Quan điểm của học sinh đối với việc sử dụng công nghệ trong việc học phát âm trên lớp học: Khảo sát tại một trường song ngữ ở Việt Nam)


It is an undeniable fact that IT has contributed enormously to the remodeling of conventional  skills of both teaching and learning in Vietnam. English as being an essential tool in every aspects of our life, is making giant steps not only in Vietnam but also in the world. Because of above tremendously important factors, the author delivered a research named “Students’ attitudes towards using technology in language classes in learning pronunciation: A survey at a Vietnam-based international school”.

So as to gather information to evaluate the severity of the case on the studnets’ perspective , a questionnaire designed by the author administered to the 21 grade 9 students who are studying at a Vietnam-based international school named “Horizon International bilingual school” .The findings gathered from the questionnaire were meticulously scrutinized and some outcomes were put forward. Considering the substantiality of the these outcomes , the author suggested some beneficial advice,and finalized it with the drawbacks and shortcoming of the thesis.



During this research author exposed that application of technology is not appropriate enough as seen from studying. HIBS students are not gaining profits from nowadays technologies. Both teachers and students strongly` stuck in old convention method of learning English Pronunciation. Following suggested methods will serve as a reference for students to effectively acquire foreign language.  The researcher has acted his mind about the situation in order that IT will be implemented more often and more efficiently for learning English Pronunciation in the coming time. I personally think that there exist many problems left to be covered namely usage of technology in English Pronunciation learning. My paper, though, is unable to make an entirely complete overview of technology use in Vietnamese schools; it will hopefully be of some help for students who are willing to master on speaking in general and pronunciation in specific .

Evaluating the Coursebook Tiếng Anh 6, Tập 1 (Sách thí điểm) Compiled under the National Foreign Language Project Entitled “Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages in the National Education System, Period 2008-2020” (Đánh giá sách giáo khoa Tiếng Anh 6, Tập 1 (Sách thí điểm) biên soạn trong khuôn khổ của Đề án “Dạy và học ngoại ngữ trong hệ thống giáo dục quốc dân, giai đoạn 2008–2020”)

The current study aims at evaluating the textbook Tiếng Anh 6, tập 1 (Sách thí điểm) to find out whether the book is suitable with the requirements of the 2020 Project as well as the Piloted English Language Curriculum for lower secondary education in the context of teaching and learning this book in some lower secondary schools in Hai Duong province. A survey questionaire has been designed basing on a combination of evaluation checklists and criteria suggested by different authors and informal talks with the respondents are utilized as the research instruments of the study. The results of the study show a very high level of agreement for the suitability of the book among the participants. Recommendations and suggestions for future use of the book are also made in the last part of the study.

Feedback on ESL Writing: Teachers’ Practices and Students’ Preferences (Hoạt động thực tế của giảng viên và mong muốn của sinh viên đối với phản hồi trên bài viết tiếng Anh)


This case study was conducted at College of Technologies and Economics in Trade to investigate teachers’ practices and students’ strategies for handling the feedback they received as well as students’ preferences for four different types of feedback. Fifty seven students in three ESL classes were asked to fill out the questionnaires and three writing teachers were asked to participate in the interviews. In addition, students’ paragraphs with teacher feedback were analyzed to see how teacher gave the feedback and how students responded to the feedback they received. The results show that teachers used written feedback frequently, but in different ways; and students’ strategies for handling feedback varied depending on the types of feedback each teacher gave on their papers. Besides, the study revealed that students preferred teacher feedback (teacher correction, teacher correction with comments, error identification) to non-teacher feedback such as self-feedback, peer-feedback or computer- directed feedback. The findings of the study suggests that writing teachers should consider the fit between their practice and students’ preferences to choose the most suitable ways of feedback giving to help students improve their writing.

A Study on the Teachers’ Teaching Techniques for Improving the Reading Skills of Freshmen at Hanoi College of Industrial Economics (Nghiên cứu các thủ thuật dạy học của giáo viên nhằm nâng cao kỹ năng đọc cho sinh viên năm thứ nhất tại Trường Cao đẳng Kinh tế Công nghiệp Hà Nội)


This study investigates the real situation of teaching and learning reading skills at HCIE for freshmen and providing some suggested reading teaching techniques for the teachers to help teachers and students teach and learn reading skills more effectively. To attain these objectives, three kinds of instruments are applied such as survey questionnaire, observation and semi- interview. Ten English teachers and one hundred students are selected to be participants of the survey. Necessary data are gathered using questionnaires for both students and teachers. Contributing to these data, observation is used to get useful information at CKX12.8 where is experimented some effective teacher’s teaching techniques. In addition, five teachers are randomly chosen to give their opinions about their real teaching experience, difficulty and solutions. From the findings, the study depicts that while students are passive and demotivated in learning, the teachers’ techniques are dominated by traditional approach which are not effective enough to improve students’ reading skills. Basing on the research’s results, some recommendations for the students, the teachers and the authorities are stated. In conclusion, this study’s findings contributes a better understanding of teaching and learning reading techniques in general and teachers’ reading techniques in particular; however, some debatable points are unavoidable in this thesis.

Evaluating English Translation of the Short Story “The General Retires” by Nguyen Huy Thiep Based on J.House's Model (Đánh giá bản dịch Việt - Anh của truyện ngắn “Tướng về hưu” của Nguyễn Huy Thiệp dựa trên mô hình của J. House)

That translation literature has been put in the race for quantities and time triggers the need for an effective tool for assessing quality of translation. In that context, this paper applies translation quality assessment model developed by House (1977) for evaluation of an English translation of a famous Vietnamese short story. The study firstly emphasizes features and critical problems that translation literature has been facing. Secondly, the original and the translation are both analyzed in accordance with House's model before they are put in comparison with each other for mismatches to be found. Finally, these mismatches are employed to generalize quality of selected translation and to suggest some recommendations for quality improvement of the selected translation.

An Action Research on Improving 10th Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension through the Teaching of Lexical Inference Strategy at High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi National University of Education (Nghiên cứu hành động về việc nâng cao khả năng đọc hiểu của học sinh thông qua việc giảng dạy chiến lược đoán nghĩa của từ vựng tại trường Trung học phổ thông Chuyên Đại học Sư phạm Hà Nội)


This study was intended to investigate the impact of lexical inference strategy on 10th grade students’ reading comprehension ability. More specifically, the researcher strived to (1) examine whether students’ lexical knowledge had any correlation to their reading ability, (2) whether the teaching of lexical inferencing had a positive effect on tenth grade students’ reading comprehension, (3) and investigate the students’ attitudes towards the instruction.

To achieve those aims, an action research was conducted with the participation of 46 tenth grade students from a class at High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi National University of Education. The study included: (1) pretest and a questionnaire (2) the instruction of lexical inferencing strategy, (3) posttest and a questionnaire, (4) teacher’s notes and students’ learning logs. Later, (5) interviews were included to support the findings.

The main findings of the research were as follows: (1) Lexical competence served as good prediction of reading ability. The higher scores students got in vocabulary tests, the higher scores they received in reading comprehension tests. (2) Overall, the instruction of this vocabulary-learning strategy improved their reading comprehension. (3) Most of the students held positive attitudes towards the instruction of lexical inferencing strategy.

现代汉语的“白”在语义、语法上都较为简单,容易理解和把握。因此,学者对“白”的认识往往流于表面,缺少更深入的思考,这样会影响到汉语使用的准确性。因此,我们认为有必要对汉语的“白”进行一番全面的研究。

本文先阐述与课题有关的理论基础及研究背景,再对现代汉语“白”进行考察研究。考察结果表明,“白”作为单词时,其词性是可以是形容词、副词、动词。“白”作为语素时可以跟其他语素构成合成词或固定短语。在合成词和固定短语中,“白”的语义也显得较为丰富。本论文还对现代汉语“白”与越南语“trắng”的相对应表达方式及两者的文化内涵进行对比,指出它们之间的异同。最后,通过对一些现代著作里“白”的汉译越的考察,提出汉语“白”的汉-越译法,我们希望考察结果将对汉越双语词典编写及对汉、越互译工作起着积极作用。

时间词研究一直是语言学研究中的基本课题之一。关于汉语时间词,前人已从范围、归类、语义等角度作过不少研究,但对现代汉语 “现在”、“如今”和“目前”这些 时间名词的研究不多。“现在”、“如今”和“目前” 时间名词的意义和用法比较相似。因此第二语言学习者在学习和使用这些词时容易混淆。本文旨在理清“现在”、“如今”和“目前” 时间名词之间的异同和它们在越南语相应的词的异同点,希望这一研究结果有益于汉语教、学工作以及翻译方面。

本文分为五个部分:

第一部分,前言,主要介绍选题理由、研究目的、研究任务、研究方法、语料来源、研究范围及对象、论文结构等。

第二部分为现代汉语“现在”、“如今”和“目前”时间名词有关的基础理论。包括:时间词的研究现状(时间名词的范围、时间名词的归类、时间名词的句法功能、时间词的构成基准、“时点”和“时段”研究);现代汉语“现在”、“如今”和“目前”时间名词研究现状(时点和时段、“现在”、“如今”和“目前”时间名词的构词方式)。

第三部分为现代汉语时间名词“现在”、“如今”和“目前”的对比考察。本文从这些时间名词的语义、语法和语用特点进行考察兼加对比找出它们之间的异同。
